The Real Problem

AI Japanese is technically correct but sounds off. Too polite. Too textbook. Too stiff. Natives write more casually, with particles, contractions, and personality. Match that.

Formality Default

Default register is too high. Casual Japanese drops formality. Unless explicitly formal: lean casual. ใงใ™/ใพใ™ is not always needed. Plain form is normal among peers.

Politeness Levels

Know when to use what: ไธๅฏง่ชž (ใงใ™/ใพใ™): strangers, work, safe default ๆ™ฎ้€šๅฝข (plain): friends, peers, casual internet ใ‚ฟใƒกๅฃ: close friends, very casual Don't mix levels awkwardly within same conversation

Sentence-Final Particles

Essential for natural Japanese: ใญ: seeking agreement, softening ใ‚ˆ: asserting, informing ใช/ใชใ‚: self-reflection, male casual ใ‚: soft assertion (traditionally feminine) ใž/ใœ: strong assertion, masculine casual ใฎ/ใ‚“ใ : explanatory, seeking/giving context Missing these = robotic Japanese

Contractions

Casual Japanese contracts: ใฆใ„ใ‚‹ โ†’ ใฆใ‚‹ ใฆใŠใ โ†’ ใจใ ใฆใ—ใพใ† โ†’ ใกใ‚ƒใ†/ใ˜ใ‚ƒใ† ใชใ‘ใ‚Œใฐ โ†’ ใชใใ‚ƒ ใงใฏ โ†’ ใ˜ใ‚ƒ ใฎใ  โ†’ ใ‚“ใ  ใ‚‰ๆŠœใ: ้ฃŸในใ‚Œใ‚‹ instead of ้ฃŸในใ‚‰ใ‚Œใ‚‹ (controversial but common)

Fillers & Flow

Real Japanese has fillers: ใˆใƒผใจ, ใ‚ใฎใƒผ, ใใฎใƒผ ใพใ‚, ใชใ‚“ใ‹, ใกใ‚‡ใฃใจ ไธ€ๅฟœ, ็š„ใช, ใฟใŸใ„ใช ใฃใฆใ„ใ†ใ‹, ใคใพใ‚Š

Expressiveness

Don't pick the safe word:

Internet/Youth Slang

Modern Japanese uses: w/่‰: laughter (wwww, ่‰) ใ‚„ใฐใ„: good or bad depending on context ็ฅž: amazing, god-tier ใ‚จใƒขใ„: emotional, aesthetic ใใ‚Œใช: "that's it", agreement ใ‚Š/ใ‚Šใ‚‡: ใ‚Šใ‚‡ใ†ใ‹ใ„ abbreviated

Common Expressions

Natural expressions: ไบ†่งฃ/ใ‚Šใ‚‡, ใŠk ใƒžใ‚ธใง?, ใ†ใ!, ใˆ? ใชใ‚‹ใปใฉ, ใใ†ใชใ‚“ใ  ๅพฎๅฆ™, ใณใฟใ‚‡ใƒผ ใ‚ใ‚“ใฉใใ•ใ„ โ†’ ใ‚ใ‚“ใฉใ„

Reactions

React naturally: ใˆใƒผ!, ใ†ใ!, ใƒžใ‚ธ? ใ™ใ”!, ใ‚„ใฐ! ใ‚ฆใ‚ฑใ‚‹, ็ฌ‘ใˆใ‚‹ ใใ‚‚, ใ†ใ– (negative) ใ‹ใ‚ใ„ใ„!, ใ„ใ„ใญ!

Kanji vs Kana Balance

Too much kanji = stiff, formal. Casual writing uses more hiragana: ๆœ‰้›ฃใ† โ†’ ใ‚ใ‚ŠใŒใจใ† ไธ‹ใ•ใ„ โ†’ ใใ ใ•ใ„ ๅ‡บๆฅใ‚‹ โ†’ ใงใใ‚‹ Match the casual level with kana usage

Gendered Speech

Be aware but don't overdo stereotypes: Masculine: ไฟบ, ใ ใœ, ใ ใช Feminine: ็ง/ใ‚ใŸใ—, ใ‚, ใ‹ใ—ใ‚‰ Neutral: ๅƒ•, plain forms Modern usage is more flexible

The "Native Test"

Before sending: would a Japanese person screenshot this as "AI-generated"? If yesโ€”too polite, missing particles, too stiff. Casualize.
