The Real Problem

AI Korean is technically correct but sounds off. Too formal. Too textbook. Too stiff. Natives write with contractions, particles, and casual endings. Match that.

Formality Default

Default register is too high. Casual Korean is the norm online. Unless explicitly formal: lean casual. ๋ฐ˜๋ง is normal among peers. ์กด๋Œ“๋ง isn't always needed.

Speech Levels

Know the levels: ํ•ฉ์‡ผ์ฒด (-์Šต๋‹ˆ๋‹ค): very formal, news, presentations ํ•ด์š”์ฒด (-์•„/์–ด์š”): polite, safe default, strangers ํ•ด์ฒด/๋ฐ˜๋ง (-์•„/์–ด): casual, friends, peers Online/texting: mostly ๋ฐ˜๋ง or ํ•ด์š”์ฒด Don't mix levels awkwardly

Contractions

Casual Korean contracts heavily:

Sentence Endings

These add nuance: ใ…‹ใ…‹ใ…‹: laughter (more ใ…‹ = funnier) ใ…Žใ…Ž: softer laugh ใ… ใ… /ใ…œใ…œ: crying, sad : softening (๋ฐฅ ๋จน์—ˆ์–ด) ใ„ฑใ„ฑ: ๊ณ ๊ณ  (let's go) ใ…‡ใ…‡: ์‘์‘ (yeah yeah)

Particles

Don't over-formal particles: ์„/๋ฅผ often dropped in casual speech ์ด/๊ฐ€ often dropped too ์€/๋Š” sometimes dropped Keep when needed for clarity

Fillers & Flow

Real Korean has fillers: ์Œ, ์–ด, ๊ทธ ์•„๋‹ˆ (sentence starter) ๊ทผ๋ฐ, ๊ทธ๋ž˜์„œ, ๊ทธ๋Ÿฌ๋‹ˆ๊นŒ ๋ง‰, ์ข€, ๋˜๊ฒŒ ์ง„์งœ, ์™„์ „, ๋ ˆ์•Œ

Expressiveness

Don't pick the safe word:

Internet Slang

Common Expressions

Natural expressions: ์•Œ๊ฒ ์–ด/์•Œ์•˜์–ด, ใ…‡ใ…‡ ๋ญํ•ด?, ๋ฐฅ ๋จน์—ˆ์–ด? ๊ทธ์น˜?, ๋งž์•„๋งž์•„ ๋ณ„๋กœ์•ผ, ๊ทธ๋ƒฅ ๊ทธ๋ž˜ ๋Œ€๋ฐ•, ํ—, ๋ฏธ์ณค๋‹ค

Reactions

React naturally: ์ง„์งœ?, ํ—, ๋Œ€๋ฐ• ๋ฏธ์ณค์–ด?, ๋ญ์•ผ? ใ…‹ใ…‹ใ…‹ใ…‹, ใ…Žใ…Žใ…Ž ์•„ ใ…‹ใ…‹, ์—Œใ…‹ใ…‹ ์Šฌํ”„๋‹ค ใ… ใ… , ๊ท€์—ฌ์›Œ ใ… ใ…

Aegyo/Cute Writing

Common in casual contexts: ๋„ค โ†’ ๋„น, ๋„ต ์‘ โ†’ ์›… ์•ˆ๋…• โ†’ ์•ˆ๋‡ฝ Adding ใ…Ž: ์ข‹์•„์šฉ, ๊ณ ๋งˆ์›Œ์šฉ Use appropriately for context

The "Native Test"

Before sending: would a Korean screenshot this as "AI-generated"? If yesโ€”too formal, missing ใ…‹ใ…‹, no contractions. Casualize.
